Richard Morgan Fliehr was born in Memphis, Tennessee on February 25, 1949. But spent most of his childhood in Edina, Minnesota when his family moved to Tennessee.

It was adopted by Dr. Richard Reid Fliehr and Kathleen Kinsmiller Fliehr. His birth name was thought to be Fred Phillips, but in other documents, he is also called Fred Demaree or Stewart.

During his high school years at the Wayland Academy. He competed in interscholastic wrestling, track, and football. After graduating from high school, he studied at the University of Minnesota.


Flair defeated Dusty Rhodes on September 17, 1981, for his first NWA World Heavyweight Championship. Flair also suffered losses in several matches, but a few days later he regained the title and won it again.

In 1983, Harley Race won the NWA World Heavyweight Championship with Flair. However, Flair regained the title in a steel cage match at Starrcade.

On September 25, 1987, Flair lost to Ron Garvin in the NWA World Heavyweight Championship, and Garvin retained the title for two months before losing to Flair in the first WCW pay-per-view event in November 26, 1987.
